One of my pet peeves is when writers act like they aren't allowed to have anyone just "say" anything. So you have people stating, explaining, suggesting, indicating, emphasizing, sighing, even (my personal favorite) smiling their sentences.
"There is a real sense of accomplishment," smiled Smith. Oh, so he just smiled and out came that sentence? No, he said it with a smile, or better yet, he just said it. This is not sixth-grade creative writing! The article with the most sort-of synonyms for "said" does not win a prize!
It drives me out of my mind.

I am a little afraid to just smile. You never know what type of sentence would come out of my smile. Great commentary!
Haha, that's pretty funny, Jennifer. I never really thought about it, but I guess many people would not distinguish between creative fiction writing and newspaper writing! good point!!
