Several years ago, after Matt and I were married but before we had the slightest notion that we'd wind up doing what we're doing where we're doing it, we took a quiz at a nifty site called FindYourSpot.com. This site questions you about everything from what kind of weather you prefer to how you spend your free time, then spits out a list of places it thinks you'd like to live.
Back in the day, the No. 1 town this site recommended for us was Hickory, N.C. Yesterday I took the quiz again after Kate linked to it in a post on her wonderful preservation blog, and I was surprised that Hickory again came up as the top spot for me. (Hendersonville, N.C., and Greenville, S.C., were also in my Top 10, as were four cities in California and one each in Georgia, Utah and Oregon. I told Spot to eliminate big cities as well as anything in the desert or the plains, but otherwise, the results were based solely on my answers to the quiz questions.)
I may have driven through Hickory and Hendersonville, but I've never spent extended time either place; maybe I should. As most of you probably have picked up on by now, I LOVE Greenville, so that was a great call by the site.
If you take this quiz, let me know where Spot places you!

I'm no genius, but I know what the Scopes Monkey Trial was about
Did you guys read about this? Twenty-five hundred randomly selected Americans took a 33-question quiz on U.S. history, government and basic economics. The average grade was 49 percent. Those in that group who identified themselves as elected government officials did even worse, with an average score of 44 percent.
I certainly have no special knowledge of civics, but I took the quiz and got 29 out of 33 correct. I did guess on a couple, but there were so many gimmes that it is flabbergasting to think so many people still got less than half right.
By gimmes I mean questions like these:
What are the three branches of government?
A. executive, legislative, judicial
B. executive, legislative, military
C. bureaucratic, military, industry
D. federal, state, local
The United States Electoral College:
A. trains those aspiring for higher political office
B. was established to supervise the first televised presidential debates
C. is otherwise known as the U.S. Congress
D. is a constitutionally mandated assembly that elects the president
E. was ruled undemocratic by the Supreme Court
Name two countries that were our enemies during World War II.
A. Canada and Mexico
B. Germany and Japan
C. England and Spain
D. China and Russia
In his “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
A. argued for the abolition of slavery
B. advocated black separatism
C. morally defended affirmative action
D. expressed his hopes for racial justice and brotherhood
E. proposed that several of America’s founding ideas were discriminatory
Want to feel smart and kill a few minutes? Click here to take the quiz yourself. I bet some of you will score 100.

If you need a five-minute break ...
Click here to take a quiz that sounds much easier than it is. It tests how many of the 100 most common English words you can think of in five minutes. I could come up with only 56. Wow.

1. (a) 2 (b) 4 (c) 6
2. (a) 6 (b) 4 (c) 7 (d) 2 (e) 1
3. (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 5 (d) 7 (e) 6
4. (a) 4 (b) 6 (c) 2 (d) 1
5. (a) 6 (b) 4 (c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 2
6. (a) 6 (b) 4 (c) 2
7. (a) 6 (b) 2 (c) 4
8. (a) 6 (b) 7 (c) 5 (d) 4 (e) 3 (f) 2 (g) 1
9 (a) 7 (b) 6 (c) 4 (d) 2 (e) 1
10 (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 6 (f) 1
Now add up the total number of points.
OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should 'handle with care.' You're seen as vain, self-centered, and who is extremely dominant. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.
51 TO 60 POINTS : Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.
41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding; someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.
31 TO 40 POINTS : Others see you as sensible, cauti ous, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.
21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.
UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions & who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you well know that you aren't.

The maid of honor
http://www.okcupid.com/online.dating.persona.test
Who can resist a good personality quiz? Not I.
Deliberate Gentle Love Master (DGLM)
Appreciated for your kindness and envied for all your experience, you are The Maid of Honor. Charismatic, affectionate, and terrific in relationships, you are what many guys would call a "perfect catch"--and you probably have many admirers, each wishing to capture your long-term love. You're careful, extra careful, because the last thing you want is to hurt anyone. Especially some poor boy whose only crime was liking you.
We've deduced you're fully capable of a dirty fling, but you do feel that post-coital attachment after hooking up. So, conscientious person that you are, you do your best to reserve physical affection for those you respect...so you can respect yourself.
Your biggest negative is the byproduct of your careful nature: indecision. You're just as slow rejecting someone as you are accepting them.
Your exact female opposite:
Half-Cocked
Random Brutal Sex Dreamer
Always avoid: The False Messiah (DBLM), The 5-Night Stand (DBSM), The Vapor Trail (RBLM), The Bachelor (DGSM)
Consider: The Gentleman (DGLM), someone just like you.

Almost lunchtime
Believe me when I say this is harder than it sounds. For best results, do NOT do it in an office with people trying to talk to you.
