Yesterday Matt and I went to an antiques fair, which was a much bigger production than I was expecting, and although some things were overpriced, there were some good deals too.
We bought a small blue chest with pressed-tin panels in the front and sides and a larger but similar piece to serve as Matt's chest of drawers/the command center.
The command center: Our current kitchen has a built-in desk area where we keep keys, sunglasses, loose change, cell phones, Matt's wallet, etc. Basically, this is a holding area for all the contents of Matt's pockets, which he empties when he gets home and reloads when he leaves. There are a couple of bowls to theoretically contain these items, but inevitably they wind up scattered all over the desktop.
The new kitchen doesn't have a desk area or as much counter space, so we decided that we'll start keeping all of that stuff in our bedroom, which makes sense because our bedroom is on the way from the garage to the rest of the house.
Before I knew what was happening there were plans for a full-force "command center," complete with the house phone/answering machine, cell phone chargers and alarm clock. Matt had a vision of how he wanted it to look -- the size (shortish) and style (solid back, so no wires would be visible, and at least one drawer).
My main problem with the command center is the name. It's such a man thing. I tried referring to it as a console, which though imperfect was the only alternative I could come up with. It totally did not take. Does anyone have a better idea?
