Cheeseballs

I've been forced to reconsider my initial impression of Portsmouth. It's really a pretty ghetto place. We went into a Food Lion and there were security guards, y'all. It's worse than Fayetteville! So props to the local visitors bureau that made this town look so appealing on the Internet. As Matt said, everywhere can't be awesome.

I don't mean to whine, though. It's hard to ruin a long weekend capping off a week at the beach.

Ruth's Chris verdict: All in all, while a great place to celebrate an anniversary, it fell short of the hype. The bread and salad were excellent, steaks were very good, wine was pretty good and baked potato was average. Ironwood is better and a heck of a lot less expensive. Ruth's Chris did make a semi-big deal about it being our anniversary, and they gave us a complimentary chocolate mousse dessert with candles. Because we didn't know that was coming we had also ordered cheesecake with strawberries and blueberries, which we boxed up and ate for breakfast this morning. Absolutely delicious.

Today we've mostly bummed. We slept in, ate cheesecake, read for a little while, then went to lunch at a (sketchy) downtown pub. Then we spent a couple of hours at the art museum in Norfolk, which was pretty cool. We stocked up at the (scary) grocery store on the way back and resumed lying around our hotel room, reading, this time with snacks.

You know a vacation has served its purpose when, at the end of it, you're looking forward to going back to work. "If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work." - Shakespeare

I'm starting to identify, but I'm still happy next week will be a short week because of Memorial Day. Speaking of, do you in-town people want to have a cookout at our house Monday night? We miss you!
