We're going to celebrate my birthday in Phoenix, Ariz.!
I am a HUGE fan of Travelocity's last-minute package deals. Just this morning, two days before the Labor Day weekend, Matt and I booked four nights in a three-diamond downtown Phoenix hotel, for about $300 each -- total for the trip -- including hotel, flights, taxes and fees. We won't need a car because we can walk to everything.
We're flying out around 5 p.m. this Friday, will arrive in Phoenix at about 10 p.m., then will leave Phoenix around noon next Tuesday and will be back home by 10 that night. I'm so excited! We've never been to Phoenix.
In February we got an equally good deal when we used the same method to plan Carrie's bachelorette trip. Five of us ended up flying to Boston and staying for three nights in one of the nicest hotels I've ever seen, right in downtown Boston -- we could easily walk to everything -- for about $215 per person.
The only other expenses were for shopping, eating and a few cab fares (e.g. to and from the airport, and to see a ballet one night). The whole trip literally cost less than four days in Charlotte would have, and it was about 10 times more fun.
I don't mean to sound like a Travelocity spokeswoman, but I don't think you can beat their last-minute packages if you have a fairly flexible schedule, enjoy spontaneity, and aren't too picky about where you go. (I was about to book a package deal to Philadelphia, but someone else snapped it up before I could click "confirm.")
Any advice on sights to see from those of you who have been to Phoenix before?

Jennifer, I'm really happy for you guys. I don't know a thing about Phoenix, but I've always liked the legend of the phoenix (big in Harry Potter and the story of Atlanta). But don't expect the same weather you had in Boston! Ha!
Love, Dad
Yes...I forgot to mention that it's going to be 108+ every day we're there. But Stephen and Bill promise it's going to feel like upper 80s because it's so dry there. We'll see!
Well, you know the Apache Trail is near there. It's MANY miles worth of driving around canyons, lakes, open desert, etc. Although it's definitely not for nervous people - it's slow going and you'd never want to do the whole trail. Phoenix is filled with artsy stuff too, if y'all like that, like art walks and museums. I know Matt's been to the Grand Canyon, can't remember if you have, of course you can't get close enough for it to be worth anything. Although they do have a new glass overlook, but I'm not sure if that's on the AZ side or not.
yay!! you guys are going to have so much fun!! you better have cell phone reception for me to call you on monday and sing my heart out!
