There's this girl who works at Subway who I think is messing with my mind.
I am a frequent customer. She knows my face and she even knows exactly how I like my sandwich. Sometimes she'll tell the person doing my toppings "Be sure you add lots of pickles" or "She's going to want extra cheese." And then when she takes my money she usually is really friendly and talkative and will ask how I've been or mention that she hasn't seen me for a while or whatever. And she won't charge me for the extra cheese.
But about 10 percent of the time it's like she has never seen me before. I'll give her this hesitant smile like "Is today a day you recognize me?" and she'll look back at me blankly. And then I'll get to the cash register and ask her how she's doing and she'll say "Fine. That will be $3.50," give me my change and tell me to have a nice day. She's always polite enough, never rude; it just throws me off.
The first time we "met" we got into an argument because I thought (and still think) that I paid with a $20 but she gave me change for a $10. Of course it was my word against hers and I had no way of proving it, so it was a $10 lesson learned. Now I always pay with a $5 or a credit card and we're on good terms.
Except when she pulls out that disconcerting blank stare. What's up with that?

Did you ever consider that maybe she's a twin? That would be really funny!
Call me when you're back and settled in - I am SO not in the mood to work today and we need to catch up! I love you!
Brilliant! That has never occurred to me, and although it's unlikely, it's the only thing I can think of that would explain everything.
I can't wait to see you tomorrow! I love you!
